FAQs about Health Cohorts

Consider these common questions as you discover more.

  • We provide community forums to discuss current medical topics and health care issues.

Ideas and topics come from virtual listening sessions held each week. A program committee helps to clarify and catalog the ideas via subject matter and focus.

For topics that move to the next stage, workgroups (cohorts) are formed and members can then choose to join the Cohort via an brief online registration and application process.

Similar to a local community college model or online certification or degree program, the Cohort can “launch” once a minimum registration count is reached.

Once registration is full (about 6 to 8 participants), a Cohort becomes “active” and group collaboration (virtual, in-person, hybrid) begins.

Cohorts are “four week ad-hoc committee” environments that are carefully facilitated to ensure full participation. A “Cohort Participant Guide” is provided for needed structure and clarity of process.

At the end of the four weeks, the meetings stop, the homework is due: a “Cohort Paper” is put forth (co-authored by all participants) and published online for peer review.

Virtual and local in-person events may follow with the co-chairs of each Cohort invited to tell the story of their group work to invite adoption and spark wider publication and discussion.

  • How you ask a question is just as important as what you ask. Here’s a suggested framework to follow:

“Specific to (CORE TOPIC) with an intentional look at (FOCUS AREA) what (IDEA, ISSUE, PROBLEM, DILEMMA, CIRCUMSTANCE, SITUATION, OPPORTUNITY) do you propose for a Cohort to take on?

(example) “Looking at (People & Populations) with goals to (Promote Health), obesity is recognized as a chronic disease and a significant threat to public health today (AACE, ACE, AMA) yet clinical guidelines for treatment and lifestyle interventions seemingly lack broad awareness or adoption in the United States. Why is that?”

  • Proposed Cohorts are ideas, opportunities, issues, limitations, pitfalls, and viewpoints that exist everywhere in health care and medicine today.

Open Cohorts have risen from the list of Proposed Cohorts, having met multilevel selection criteria. Now that an original idea is at the Open Cohort level (“open for registration”) a minimum number of signups are needed to actually form the ad-hoc group.

Active Cohorts are deemed to be “full” having met the necessary minimum number of and assembly of the registrants can finally occur.
